Los Jinetes de la bicicleta

Hi Carole here -

Well, what an absolutely brilliant time we had in cycling Cuba and all its undulations. What a beautiful county with its rolling hillsides, sugar plantations and orange groves, it's rich and colourful culture, its impressive historical monuments and architecture, its lively salsa music and dance and its wonderful and friendly people. It's no wonder that when Columbus discovered it in 1492, he called it the most beautiful land that human eyes had ever seen, and he'd seen a few! And let us not forget why we went to Cuba. We went there to raise funds for the NDCS - an extremely worthwhile cause who do so much to help deaf children and their families. I don't know how much we raised in total but it must have been well over £30,000. So BIG PAT ON THE BACK for all of us.

CYCLE ISLE OF WHITE

This bonza of a trip is proposed for this summer (probably in August) and is being organised by the one and only Libby. In her own words this is whats on offer :

I propose all heading over on the Friday night (may entail some of you northerners taking an afternoon off I guess). We'll use my folks place as a base. Dump our stuff and our bikes (some can hire on the island), nip to the public house for beverage and a burger and I will sort accom for all who can make it. Prob about 6-8 at Mum and Dad's and then friends run B&B's down the road for the others. Can't be arsed with camping personally! Unless someone wants to bring my tent over on their bike and pitch it for me and bring me a hot water bottle at intervals during the night.

Mum and Dad will prob sleep on the boat so as not to cramp our style but will be on hand to stoke up the barbie! We'll set off on first leg along South coast of island on the Saturday and I will book B&B's for the Sat night at the end of the island (someone will drive our kit to our destination - I'm checking out Miguel's availability) and then on the Sunday morning we can return to Yarmouth along the North coast (can someone bring a puncture repair kit?) and will hopefully be greeted with a `Cuba Libre` or a Pimms daaaahling! We can head back on the Sunday afternoon/evening or not as the case may be. If you could come back to me with your availabilty at your earliest convenience and I will simply pick the date that MOST people can do. OK, here goes (press reply and put yes/no next to dates:

REUNION BALL

If you have received the new NDCS brochure there should have been an invite to a reunion ball enclosed. It is being organised by a couple of people that have done loads of trips with the NDCS to raise money for their next.

Abby will be attending and several of us and it should be quite a laugh as well as bit of a swank affair and a good excuse to dress up in your glad rags!

Its on July 12th and tickets cost £42 for a three course meal with welcome drink and disco till 1am. Contact Abby if your interested and need more info.

The more people go the better the trip.If this sounds in any way attractive can I suggest you contact Neil Smith to get the numbers established.

NDSC BROCHURE

By now we've all had a copy of theNDCS brochure showing us the latest Challenges for 2004. Some very exciting stuff in there. Here's a taster :

Trek the Inca Trail

Peru, where legends, mystery and natural beauty combine
11 - 20 June 2004
Minimum sponsorship is £2,500.

Discover the magical Andes mountains on this stunning trek. After four days of trekking you'll stand triumphant at an ancient sun gate looking down on the lost city of the Incas - the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu.

You'll be overwhelmed, amazed and elated as you reach your final goal having had four of the most fantastic days of your life.
Personally (me Carole) quite fancy this one and may do it if I can get hold of some monies.

Cycle China

Follow the Yellow River to the Terracotta Warriors in Xi'an
23 April - 3 May 2004
Minimum sponsorship is £2,500.

Following the Yellow River to the Terracotta Warriors in Xi'an, this exciting itinerary cuts right through the heartland of both ancient and modern day Chinese culture. Passing through Henan and Shaanxi Provinces where remnants of some of the most ancient civilisations on earth are still clearly visible, the Yellow River binds this area and its population together. In the region we not only find the famous Terracotta Warriors of Xi'an but also the place where Mao Tze Tung and his followers began their Communist revolution just over 50 years ago. A really extraordinary challenge and an unbeatable experience.

And remember our pact for
Cycle Vietnam

The slowly-awakening jewel of south-east Asia
Sometime in 2005 (hopefully details will be available next year)
Minimum sponsorship £2,600.

Discover at first hand the unique and rich civilisation, spectacular scenery and warm welcome of Vietnam on the first NDCS Cycle Vietnam challenge. From the bustling city of Saigon, to the gentle hill station of Dalat, the lively atmosphere of seaside Nha Trang and verdant Mekong Delta, prepare to be amazed by the natural beauty and traditional charm of a country taking its first steps into the modern world.
